How Do I Know What Size Reel Seat I Need?

When it comes to fishing, having the right equipment is crucial for success. One important component of your fishing rod that often gets overlooked is the reel seat. But how do you know what size reel seat you need? Let's dive into the factors to consider.

Consider the Reel Size

The size of the reel will play a significant role in determining the appropriate reel seat size. Make sure to match the reel seat size with the size of the reel to ensure a secure fit. A reel seat that is too small will limit the size reel you can mount.  A size 16 reel seat will not allow you to mount a MK80 reel. It's too large to fit the reel seat. A large reel seat will not hold a small reel securely. It will be wobbly at best. Match large reels with large reel seats and small reels with small reel seats.

Think About the Rod Blank Diameter

Another crucial factor to consider is the diameter of your rod blank. The reel seat should fit over the rod blank with a small gap for the 2 part epoxy adhesive. You don't want the reel seat to be exactly the same size as the rod blank. Measure the diameter of your rod blank and choose a reel seat that is slightly larger than the rod blank. Then there will be room for the epoxy.

Consider the Type of Fishing

The type of fishing you plan on doing can also influence the size of the reel seat you need. For example, if you are targeting larger fish that require heavier gear, you may need a larger reel seat to accommodate a bigger reel. On the other hand, if you are fishing for smaller species, a smaller reel seat may suffice.

Consult with a Professional

If you are unsure about what size reel seat to choose, don't hesitate to consult with a fishing gear expert. They can provide valuable insights based on your specific needs and preferences. A professional can help you select the right reel seat size to optimize your fishing experience.

By considering factors such as reel size, rod blank diameter, and the type of fishing you plan on doing, you can determine the appropriate size reel seat for your fishing rod. Choosing the right size reel seat is essential for ensuring stability, balance, and overall performance while out on the water.
