The Halibut is the largest flatfish and in the same family as flounder and fluke. They are found in the Atlantic and Pacific and both are about the same size.
The average Halibut weighs around 100 - 150 lbs. but can grow to 500+ lbs. They mature in 10 years but can live up to 50 years. Halibut continue to grow their entire life like most fish. They can grow to 15 feet in length.
The largest Halibut caught on rod and reel weighed an approximated 700 lbs. It's actually weight was 615 but that was after it was gutted. The organs and fluids most likely weighed an additional 60 - 80 lbs.
Halibut are extremely strong fish and put up a good battle. You will need a good heavy 80/130 lb. rod and reel setup and some 130+ lb. braided fishing line.
There are many 400+ lb. Halibut caught every year. They are great eating as well as for sport.
