What Size Fishing Line for Bluefin Tuna?
Well, it really depends on how big the Bluefin Tuna fish is that you're after.
The "Rule of Thumb" is a 3 to 1 ratio of fish weight to line weight for novice anglers and 5 to 1 for experienced anglers. So, if you want to catch a 400 lb. Bluefin Tuna then you need 80 lb. to 100 lb. fishing line. But, heavier is always better. A 130 lb. Tuna Rod with 130 lb. to 200 lb. braided line will be well suited for any Bluefin Tuna out there. If your reel can hold 500 to 1000 yards of 200 lb. braided line, then definitely go with that.
Braided PE fishing line is available in 120 lb., 130 lb., 150 lb., 200 lb., 250 lb., 300 lb. and 400 lb. test.
Braided PE fishing line comes in a variety of braids. There are 4 strand, 8 strand, 9 strand, 12 strand and 16 strand. The more strands in the braid, the smoother and finer the line. Higher strand braids offer greater knot strength and less guide friction. If you are out for Giant Bluefin Tuna, then go with 12 strand braided PE line in 120 to 200 lb. test.
Bluefin Tuna average around 200 lbs. but will grow their entire life. Giant Bluefins will weight over 500 lbs. and the largest caught on rod and reel weighed 1,440 lbs.
