Braided Fishing Line

Braided fishing line has come along way since braided Dacron in the 70's and 80's. Now PE or Polyethylene braids come in 4, 8, 12 and 16 strand braids. The more strands the better the performance. Adding more strands in the braid makes the line more resistant to abrasion and  builds up less heat because less friction.

Braided PE fishing line does not stretch like monofilament and assists in hooking a fish. It's super strong and best of all it's very thin. 80 lb. braided PE is about 0.44 mm or 0.01889 inches. It's tiny and allows you to put more line on the same size reel. If a reel holds 300 yards of 20 lb. monofilament, it will hold 500 yards of 50 lb. braided.

Now there are even more variables than strands. Fishing line engineers have created special PE strands like UHMWPE or Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene. This is Reaction Tackle's formulation. It's a super line.

The more strands in the braid, the more expensive the fishing line becomes but it has benefits in some applications like shark fishing. Shark fishing is very demanding on rod, reel and line. 8 strand or greater would reduce line break risks and is worth the extra cost.

8 strand braided line is a good all-around line for medium to large fish. 4 strand is good for lighter fish in the 8 - 20 lb. tests. 12 or 16 strand is ideal for Tuna, Shark and Swordfish.

8, 12 and 16 strand braids offer higher knot strength too.

8 strand braided fishing line is available in line weights of 10 lb. to 300 lb. and in spools of 150 yards to 2500 yards. 4 strand comes in line weights of 6 lb. to 100 lb.
